Jewish: acronymic surname from benei av beit din ‘children of the av bet din’. In 16th-century Poland and Lithuania the title av beit din designated the principal of the Orthodox Jewish college or seminary who promulgated Jewish legal rulings and took part in the communal administration;
it was also used as the title of the district rabbi of a large community.
