Variant of Ardern recorded in WR Yorks from the 16th century onwards as Ardron and Arthurne and with dissimilation of the first r as Atheron, Athorne, and Haythorne. From Eythorne (Kent) recorded as (æt) Heahgyðe ðorne in 805-7 and as Egethorne, Eythorn, and Aythorn in the 13th century.

The place-name derives from the genitive singular of the Old English female personal name Hēahgȳð + Old English þorn ‘thorn bush’. Variant of Hawthorn.
