English (of Norman origin): from the Anglo-Norman French personal name Astin a shortened form of Asketin a diminutive of Old Norse Ásketill composed of the elements áss ‘god’ + ketill ‘sacrificial cauldron helmet’ (see Haskell Askin).

There has been some confusion over the years between this surname and others (in particular Aspden Aston and Austin).
