Americanized form of German Asmann or Assmann. English (mainly Yorkshire): variant of Ashman. In some cases possibly also Dutch or Flemish: from a personal name composed of the ancient Germanic elements asc ‘ash tree spear (of ashwood)’ + man ‘man’.

Alternatively, it could be a habitational name for someone from any of several places called As(se) or Asch(e) in the Netherlands and Belgium, derived from Middle Dutch asc ‘ash tree’.

The surname Asman is rare in the Netherlands and Belgium.
