Basque: Castilianized form (Armendáriz) of Armendaritz which is either a patronymic from Armentari from the Latin occupational name armentarius ‘herdsman’ or a habitatonal name from the village of Armendaritze (in French: Armendarits) in Lower Navarre (now in Pyrénées-Atlantiques France) most likely named from the same Latin word.

Derivation from the elements arri ‘rock’ + mendi ‘mountain’ + aritz ‘oak’ is probably a folk etymology. Compare Almendarez Almendariz and Armendarez.
