Italian (southern): from the personal name Anania Greek Ananias from Hebrew Hananyah ‘answered by the Lord’. This was the name of a character mentioned in the New Testament (Acts) who was struck dead for lying.
Despite this, it was a popular name among early Christians and was borne by several saints venerated in the Greek Orthodox Church.
