Swedish: ornamental name from the root Al- of the placename Alseda (a village and parish in Småland named from al ‘alder’) + the suffix -inder (probably adapted from Greek andros genitive of anēr ‘man’). This surname was adopted in NE by a Swedish family from Alseda; in this form it is not found in Sweden where surnames with the same or similar background are spelled Alinder and Ahlinder.

English and Scottish: variant of Allender. This surname is not found in Britain.
