Zahradnik Family History
Zahradnik Surname Meaning
Czech (Zahradník) and Slovak (Záhradník Zahradník) are status names for a person who farmed on a small scale. The term originates from the Czech word zahrada and the Slovak word záhrada, both meaning ‘smallholding, orchard, or garden’.
A zahradník (literally ‘gardener’) typically held lands that were larger than those of a cottager, known as a chalupník (see Chalupa), but smaller than those of a farmer, referred to as a sedlák (see Sedlak).
