From Wolvey (Warwicks), which is recorded as Wlueia in 120. The place-name probably derives from Old English wulf ‘wolf’ + ēg ‘island’, though the final element may be (ge)hæg ‘enclosure’.

From Middle English wolf ‘wolf’ + heie ‘hedge enclosure’, perhaps for a person whose job it was to trap wolves or to protect other animals from them. Some of the early bearers may belong with (2).

From the Old English female personal name Wulfgifu from wulf ‘wolf’ + gifu geofu ‘gift’. See also Woolway.
