Wheddon Family History
Wheddon Surname Meaning
From Wheddon Farm, Wheddon Cross in Cutcombe (Somerset), recorded as Wheteden and Whetedon in 1253, or perhaps Wheadown Farm in Witheridge (Devon), which is recorded as Wheydoune in 1294 and Weydon in 1295.
The Somerset place-name derives from Old English hwǣte ‘wheat’ + denu ‘valley’ or dūn ‘hill’.
The Devon place-name probably derives from Old English hwǣg ‘whey’, perhaps also meaning ‘sour land’ + dūn.
