Wenzel Family History
Wenzel Surname Meaning
German and Danish: from the German personal name Wenzel, a pet form (with the diminutive suffix -l) of the Middle High German Wenze, a borrowing from Slavic, a short form of the personal name found in Old Czech as Vęceslav (see Vaclav).
The borrowing into German took place before Czech lost its nasal vowels. The surname of German origin is also found in some central European countries, e.g., in Czechia, where it is more commonly spelled in Slavicized forms Vencl and Vencel.
Compare Vencill, Vensel, and Wentzel, the Germanized form of Slovenian Vencelj (see Vencel), a cognate of 1 above.
Compare Wentzel.
