From Market Weighton (ER Yorks) which is recorded as Wichetona in 1166 and Wighton in the 13th century. The place-name derives from Old English wīc ‘dwelling specialized farm’ + tūn ‘farmstead estate’. The current pronunciation of the place-name is /wi:tən/.

From Wighton (Norfolk) though some of the following bearers could belong with (1) and it is uncertain whether this surname has survived to the modern day. The place-name is recorded as Wicton in 1212 and has the same etymology as that under (1).
