Waggott Family History

Waggott Surname Meaning

A variant of Wackett with voicing of medial /k/ to /g/ exists. An alternative possibility in NE England is an unrecorded Middle English word *wagge-hed, derived from Middle English waggen ‘to wag’ + he(ve)d ‘head’. The phrase waggen with the hed meant ‘to nod; also nod in a coquettish or provocative manner’ MED.

The absence of any known medieval bearers of the name presents a difficulty. However, Thomas Waghepol from 1219 in Curia Regis Rolls and Rogerus Waghpoll' from 1379 in Poll Tax (Roud Hants) may provide evidence of a comparable name.

These historical references may suggest that the names are for ‘wag poll (head)’ rather than for ‘wag pole’. Further exploration of these documents could shed light on the origins and variations of the name.
