Virola Family History
Virola Surname Meaning
Spanish (mainly Seville): nickname from Andalusian virola ‘the ring or screw with which the plow is fastened to the beam’. Finnish: habitational name from farms so named possibly from the root of virka ‘trap snare’ + the locative suffix -la established as a hereditary surname in the 19th century in Tavastia.
In Pyhäjärvi in northern Ostrobothnia the farm name contains the root of the old Savonian surname Virolainen ‘Estonian’.
