Unett Family History

Unett Surname Meaning

From the Middle English personal name Hywenet, *Ewenet, *Ywenet. This is probably a pet form of Iwayn (see Ewen) + the Old French hypocoristic suffix -et as suggested by Tooth.

The surname in Tittensor (Staffs) is perhaps to be associated with Iwein de Titnesovere who held a knight's fee in Tittensor in 1242-3 (Book of Fees) while the surname in Colwall (Herefs) may be linked to Yone (a pronunciation of Ywain) de Dene about 1300 in Herefs Archives AA26/II/7.

He may be identical with Huenet de Den' alias Iwenet de Dane of Colwall listed below. On this evidence, John Freeman (personal communication) suggests that Thomas de Dane of Colwall 1323 in Herefs Archives AA26/II/11 may be the same man as Thomas Eunet of Colwall (1329 below) with the locative and patronymic surname alternating.

The surname may sometimes have been confused with Onyett. Formally there are other possibilities including Old French Hu(g)onet, a pet form of Hugh, or a Middle English survival of Old English *Hygenōð (see Hinett).
