From an Old English personal name *Þēoda, a short form of names with the first element þēod ‘people,’ such as Þēodwulf. Alan, son of Thede, held land called Theduluesmere in Burstall (Suffolk) from 1216 to 1272 in Ancient Deeds iii. Compare Geoffrey Thedolf in 1276 in Hundred Rolls (Bucks); John Thedwyne in 1317 in Assize Rolls (Kent).
