Tainton Family History

From Taynton in Gloucs, which is recorded as Tatinton and Tetinton in 1086, or Taynton in Oxon, which is recorded as Tængtune and Tengetune in the 11th century.

The Gloucs place-name derives from the Old English personal name Tǣta + Old English connective -ing- + tūn ‘farmstead estate’.

The Oxon place-name may derive from a lost river-name (probably identical to the river Teign in Devon, which is named with a word related to Welsh taen ‘a sprinkling’) probably meaning ‘stream’ + Old English tūn.
