Mostly from Swinden in Langsett (WR Yorks) which is recorded as Suindene in about 1190–1208 and sometimes from Swinden in Gisburn (WR Yorks) which is recorded as Suinden(e) in 1086, 1190, and 1226.
The place-names derive from Old English swīn ‘swine pig’ + denu ‘valley’.
