Summersby Family History
Summersby Surname Meaning
From Somersby (Lincs), which is recorded as Sumerdebi in about 1155, Somerby (Lincs) is recorded as Summerledeby in the 12th century and Someresby in 1428. Alternatively, Somerby (Leics) is recorded as Sumerlidebie in 1086.
The place-names probably all derive from the Old Scandinavian personal name Sumarliði combined with the Old Scandinavian bȳ, meaning ‘farmstead village’.
