Apparently from Southstone Rock in Stanford on Teme (Worcs) which is recorded as Sulstan, Suleston in 1214, Solughstone in 1353, and Soulston in 154.

The place-name derives from Old English sulh ‘furrow’ (here applied to a deep-cut valley) + stān ‘stone’ which by a regular sound change became Middle English ston(e).
