See Stebbings. From Middle English stubbing ‘land cleared of trees’ (Old English *stubbing). The surname may be topographic for someone who lived on or by land recently cleared of trees or toponymic for someone from one of several minor places so named, such as Stubbing in Grinton (NR Yorks) or Stubbing Wood in Hucknall Torkard (Notts).
From Middle English *stubbing ‘the stumpy one’ (Old English *stubbing) for a short squat person. See Stubbe. Some early bearers may belong with (1).
