Stourton Family History

From any of three places named Stourton (Staffs, Wilts, Warwicks). The places take their names from different rivers called Stour, all named with a word related to the Germanic root *stūr- ‘strong, stiff, fierce’ + Old English tūn ‘farmstead, estate’. See Sturton.

Perhaps occasionally from Storrington (Sussex), which is recorded as Storgetune in 1086. The place-name probably derives from Old English storc ‘stork’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.
