Slovenian: variant of Strle (and in part also an Americanized form this) from a derivative of streljati ‘to shoot’ or strel ‘shot’ or perhaps strela ‘thunderbolt lightning’ hence a nickname for a shooter or a bowman (compare Strelec) or perhaps for someone who habitually used the expression (gromska) strela ‘well I'll be blowed’.

South German: nickname derived from Middle High German ster sterre ‘ram’ probably for an obstinate person (see Sterr).

German: diminutive of Stehr.
