English (Gloucestershire): variant of Stigger (see Sticker) with Middle English lowering and lengthening of the vowel.

Slovenian, Czech, and Slovak (Šteger): topographic name of German origin (see 1 above).

In North America, this surname may also be an altered form of the Czech variant Štegr and of Slovenian Štegar.
