Stangel Family History
Stangel Surname Meaning
German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): from a diminutive of Stang. In part, this is a Gottscheerish (i.e., Gottschee German) surname, a variant of Stangl. The surname Stangel is also found in Czechia and Slovakia where it is also spelled Štangel. See also 2 and 3 below.
Americanized form of Austrian German Stangl and its mainly Czech variant Štangl are cognates of 1 above. Germanized or Americanized form of Slovenian Štangelj serves as a nickname for a tall thin man, at least in part of Gottscheerish (i.e., Gottschee German) origin (see 1 above and Stangl).
It is possibly also derived from štanga ‘pole shaft’ (a loanword from German). Compare Stangle.
