South German: nickname for someone who walked with his legs spread apart from Middle High German spriuzen (modern German spreizen) ‘straddle’. In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar).

Germanized form of Slovenian and Croatian Šprajcer and Šprajcar surnames of German origin (see 1 above).

In Slovenia they may (partly) be Slovenized forms of the Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname.
