Soga Family History
Soga Surname Meaning
Japanese: written 菅 ‘sedge’ which is nowadays pronounced suge or suga. It is a habitational name taken from a village in the ancient region of Asuka (now part of Nara prefecture).
It is also written phonetically 曽我 or 蘇我, the latter being the name of a great clan important in Japanese history.
Several locales throughout Japan were named for resident Soga families; later unrelated families took these habitational names as their own surnames.
