from Sloggar's Wood in Weston (Herts) which is recorded as Slowgravegayte in 1547–53 and Sloegrave feild in 1597 and perhaps also from other places similarly named such as Slow Grove in Cookham (Berks) which is recorded as Slograve in 1252–5 and Slowgrove in Steeple Ashton and Great Hinton (Wilts) recorded as Slagrave in 1257.

The place-names derive from Old English slāh ‘sloe blackthorn’ + grāf grǣfe ‘grove thicket copse’.
