Slovenian and Croatian: nickname for a refugee from the Turks (i.e. the Ottoman Empire) in the 15th and 16th centuries (see Turk) from uskok, a derivative of uskočiti ‘to flee’. It can also be a nickname for an agile or irritable man derived directly from skok ‘jump’ (compare below).
Jewish (from Lithuania and Latvia): habitational name from Skoki, the Russian and Polish name for the village of Skakai in western Lithuania.
Polish: nickname for someone who tended to dash about from skok ‘jump’.
