Skipsey Family History

Skipsey Surname Meaning

from Skipsea (ER Yorks) which is recorded as Skipse and Skypse from the 12th to 15th centuries. The place-name derives from Old Scandinavian skip ‘ship’ + Old English or Old Scandinavian sǽr ‘sea lake’.

Away from Yorks the surname has developed a later variant with Ship- presumably because of the association with sea.
