Variant of Selsby itself a form of Silsby. The existence of William Selsbey 1700 John Selsby 1702 in IGI (Brook IoW) and Frances Silsbey 1756 in IGI (Calbourne IoW) along with the early bearer examples below suggests that the name was altered under the influence of Salisbury.

There is no support in the place-name record for the idea that it may be a form of Salisbury itself.
