from Silkstone (WR Yorks) which is recorded as Silcheston(e) and Silcston(e) in 1086. The place-name probably derives from a short form of the Old English personal name Sigelāc + Old English tūn ‘farmstead estate’.

Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames points out that the name was sometimes confused with Sigston and Silson noting in the parish registers of Rothwell (WR Yorks) that Benjamin Silkston was clearly the same man as Benjamin Sigston Sillson or Sillstone.
