Shrubsole Family History

Shrubsole Surname Meaning

from a (lost?) Kent place-name recorded as Sobesole and Shopesole in medieval documents and which probably derives from an Old English personal name *Sc(e)obba + Old English sol ‘mud slough wallowing place’. It may survive in heavy disguise as Cobrahamsole Farm in Sheldwich (Kent) which is recorded as Copersole, Copesham Sole, and Copshole-farm in 178.

The surname developed an intrusive -r- from the 15th century.
