Shippam Family History

Shippam Surname Meaning

From Shipham (Somerset) which is recorded as Schepham in 1291 or Sheepham in Modbury (Devon); perhaps sometimes from Shipdham (Norfolk) which is recorded as Scipedeham in 1086 but no definite connection has been made.

The Somerset and Devon place-names derive from Old English scēap ‘sheep’ + hām ‘village homestead’ or hamm ‘enclosure water meadow’.

The Norfolk place-name derives from Old English *scēapde ‘flock of sheep’ + hām.
