Probably from Shawcroft in Goostrey (Cheshire) though no medieval forms of the place-name have been found. The place-name appears to derive from Middle English shaue ‘small wood copse’ + croft ‘enclosure’ (Old English sceaga croft).

Perhaps sometimes confused with and so a late variant of Chalcraft.
