Scotford Surname Meaning
from Scotforth (Lancs) which is recorded as Scoteford in 1204. Shotford (Norfolk) which is recorded as Scotoford in 1086. Shotford (Suffolk) which is recorded as Scotforð in about 950 or Scotsford in Heathfield (Sussex). The Gloucs surname seems to be a euphemistic form of Shutford (Oxon) which is recorded as Shitford in 1285.
The Lancs place-name derives from Old English Scot ‘Scot, Scotsman’ + ford ‘shallow place by which water can be crossed, ford’. The Norfolk and Suffolk place-names derive from Old English Scot or sc(e)ot ‘tax payment’ + ford.
The Oxon place-name probably derives from the Old English personal name *Scytta + ford. For the Sussex place-name see Scotchford.
