from a pet form of the Old French personal name Race Rasse (see Race) + the diminutive suffix -el. Compare Racelinus Hervy 1381 in Poll Tax (Church Eaton Staffs) with a double diminutive. perhaps from Old French rasel ‘measure of grain (etc.) bushel; wooden levelling-implement’.

It seems to be implied in the name of Agnes Rasel 1327 Agnes le Rasel 1334 in Subsidy Rolls (Eyhorne hundred Kent) unless the definite article is a scribal error or used to indicate that she was the widow of a man surnamed Rasel the name in (i).
