Pressick Family History

Local pronunciation of Prestwick probably comes from the Northumb place-name; see Prestwich. Alternatively, it may derive from Prissick Farm in Marton (NR Yorks), which is recorded only once in medieval documents as Prestsic in 1199–1203.

This name appears to originate from Old English prēost ‘priest’ + sīc ‘small stream’. However, the surname is not recorded before the 16th century, and Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames discounts this explanation.

In favor of the first explanation, it is argued that the modern pronunciation of the NR Yorks place-name was influenced by the surname.
