Plimsoll Family History
Plimsoll Surname Meaning
Uncertain; perhaps a locative name from Plounévézel in Finistère Brittany. The place-name may be either Breton for ‘new village parish’ with a French diminutive suffix or a dissimilated form of Breton Plou-nevezenn ‘village at newly-cleared land’.
On the other hand, the first element of the name resembles that in Plymouth, Plymstock, and others in Devon, but no local place-name of exactly this form has been found.
Whilst the connection with Protestant immigrants is assured.
