Pithouse Family History
Pithouse Surname Meaning
From Pithouse Farm in Sopley (Hants), which is recorded as Pyttehouse in 1544, a lost place called Pithouse in Knightwick (Worcs) is also noted, recorded as Pytehouse in the same year, or Pithouse Farm in Mapledurham (Oxon).
The place-names derive from Middle English pit ‘pit, hollow’ + hous ‘house, dwelling’ (Old English pytt, hūs).
