Pither Family History

Pither Surname Meaning

of uncertain origin. Formally it might be an agent noun derived from Middle English pithe (Old English piþa) ‘pith (of a plant)’ ‘essential vigour’ but this does not easily produce a convincing sense.

The name has sometimes been confused with the surname Peter as in John Peter or Pether 1526 in Oxford University Register but there is no evidence to support Reaney's inference that it originated as ‘a west-country and Cornish form of the personal name Peter.’

The name was also probably confused with Pedder. Compare Thomas Pether 1668 Thomas Pidder 1782 Thomas Peter 1783 Thomas Pedder 1786 in IGI (Bitton Gloucs).
