The Leics place-name derives from Old English pīc ‘peak’ + wella ‘spring stream’. The Devon place-name appears to derive from an Old English personal name *Piddic + Old English wella.

The Sussex place-name may derive from an Old English personal name *Pīca + Old English wella, though -well could be a corruption of Old English hyll ‘hill’; the place is on a slight hill.
