From one or more of a number of places in SE England with names derived from Old English pynd ‘enclosure pound’ (dative pynde) such as Peene in Newington next Hythe (Kent), which is recorded as Peende in 1498 and Pynde in 1573.

Peen Barn in East Sutton (also Kent) for which indirect medieval evidence seems to be provided by some of the early bearers cited below.

Pendell Court in Blechingley (Surrey) recorded as la Pende in 1259 and Pen Hill in Lancing (Sussex) recorded as Pende in about 1250 and Peende in 1416.

The surname and some of the place-names show unexceptional loss of final -d after a long vowel + n.
