Patstone Family History

Patstone Surname Meaning

Chiefly from the lost Padston(e) in Bromsgrove (Worcs) and occasionally from Padson in Inwardleigh (Devon), which is recorded as Paddiston in 156. The Worcs place-name derives from the Old English personal name Padda (genitive Paddes) + tūn ‘farmstead estate’.

The etymology of the Devon place-name is uncertain due to a lack of medieval forms, though the 1330 early bearer form below suggests the final element is Old English dūn ‘hill’.

Sometimes a variant of Paston with particular reference to Paston in Northants.
