Occasionally a habitational name from Pannal (Yorkshire), which is recorded as Panhal(e) from the 12th to 15th centuries and Pannall in 1409.

The placename derives from Old English panne ‘pan’ perhaps in the sense ‘pan-shaped (broad shallow) hollow or valley’ or ‘hollow or depression in which water stands’ + halh ‘nook corner of land’.
