Palling Family History
Palling Surname Meaning
In most cases, probably a modern spelling of Paulin with -ing substituted for -in. This originates from Palling (Norfolk), which is recorded as Pallinga in 1086 and Paullinges in 1224, and probably means ‘Pælli's people’ from the Old English personal name Pælli + the group-name suffix -ingas.
Post-medieval examples of this name in Norfolk may have been confused with (1). It is perhaps derived from an unrecorded Middle English personal name *Palling, which is a pet form of Old English Pælli or *Pælla + Old English -ing.
Development to modern Pallin and Pallen is to be expected, but these could belong to either of the other senses.
