Oxtoby Family History
Oxtoby Surname Meaning
From northern Middle English oust i by ‘east in the village’ (Old Scandinavian austr í bý) for someone who lived on the eastern side of a settlement. The 1297 form Oustinby has the Middle English preposition in (Old English in) rather than i.
The later development with -x- for -st- is irregular. An anglicized form of the name survives as Easterby.
