Probably from Ullthwaite near Staveley (Westm) rather than from Outhwaite (Lancs). In support of this interpretation Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames cites John Ultwayte or Owlthwayt 1470–2 in Ripon Memorials.

Ullthwaite is recorded as Ulvethwayt in 1301; the place-name derives from Old Scandinavian úlfr ‘wolf’ + þveit ‘clearing meadow’.
