English: habitational name from North and South Ormsby (Lincolnshire) or either of two places called Ormesby in Norfolk and the North Yorkshire. The placenames all derive from the Old Norse personal name Ormr + Old Norse bȳ ‘farmstead village’.

This surname is also common in Ireland (Connacht) where it has been established since the late 16th century.
