Nundy Family History

Nundy Surname Meaning

Perhaps a patronymic from a Scandinavian male personal name Nundi becoming Middle English Nundy and Nunde. The variations in the surname forms between Nundy and Mundy Nunde and Munde suggest two possibilities.

*Nundi may be a pet form of Old Scandinavian *Anundi, a weakly declined variant of Anund(r), a name common in eastern Scandinavia and recorded once in England in a 12th-century Yorks charter (Fellows Jensen Scand. Personal Names p. 11) and of uncertain origin.

The phonetic dissimilation of N- to M- may have been influenced by association with Old Scandinavian Mundi, a pet form of personal names ending in -mund(i).

Alternatively, *Nundi could itself be an altered form of Mundi, with initial m assimilated to the following n.

See Mundy.
